Discernment

What does discernment do in general?

"It includes perceiving the true character of people and the source and meaning of spiritual manifestations." The Guide to the Scriptures

It allows us to recognize the voice of our Heavenly Father amongst many other voices. The Book of Mormon, 3rd Nephi 11:3

Protects us from being deceived by half truths and flattering (removal of responsibility, gratitude,  or humility) theories. Doctrine and Covenants 46:7+8

According to Wikipedia, there are two ways to have the gift of discernment.

1. It is given to some by our Heavenly Father. (1 Corinthians 12:10 "To one it is given...to another discerning of Spirits;"

2. It is obtained by study, but only with the grace of Heavenly Father as well.

What are some examples the people who had the gift of discernment in the scriptures?
Ammon, Book of Mormon- Alma 18:18, 32
Moses, Pearl of Great Price- Moses 1:27
Bishops of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints D&C 46:27

How does discernment help us fully understand the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ?

In the LDS canon's The Guide to the Scriptures  we read that discernment allows us to: "understand or know something through the power of the Spirit".

Perspectives

We see ourselves in terms of yesterday and today. Our Heavenly Father sees us in terms of forever. Although we might settle for less, Heavenly Father won't, for He sees us as the glorious beings we are capable of becoming. -J B Wirthlin
